Converting a KVM to a VDI

KVM and VirtualBox are both virtualization product allowing you to run operating system in a window independent from your central operating system. Although both of them are used to run several operating system on the same hardware, KVM and VirtualBox use different file formats to store the virtual machine. To transfer KVM virtual machine to VDI file type used in VirtualBox, an indirect procedure is required.

To start converting a KVM to a VDI, firstly, download a vCenter Converter from vmware.com/products/converter/. Once you install it on KVM machine, run the program. You will see a "Convert Machine" on the top-left corner of the window, click on the button. Select "powered-on machine" and "This local machine." After that, click "Next."

Continue the approach by selecting "VMware Workstation or other VMware virtual machine" and "VMware workstation 6.5.x." Choose the name of the virtual machine that will be developed and select a location to save the virtual machine file. The file should not be places on a disk that will be converted. After that, click "Next."

Once you are done creating the file name, have the virtual machine attributes reviewed. be sure not to select "install VMware tools." Click "Next" and "Finish" to run the conversion process.

Then, open your VirtualBox software. Click "File" and choose "Virtual Media Manager." Go to "Hard disks" section on "Virtual Media Manager" window and click "Add." Select the virtual disk image you built in the vCenter Converter and click "Open."

Click "OK" to close the window and click "New" in the main VirtualBox Window. Click "Next" and select the operating system you are going to use in the virtual machine. Click "Next" again and pick the size of RAM the virtual machine required. To finish the process, click "Next" once again.

Choose "Use existing hard disk" and click on the virtual disk you created on VirtualBox. Click "Next" and follow by "Finish." After that, go to the main menu and start your new virtual machine. To install the VirtualBox tools, click on "Devices" and select "Install Guest Addition." Once you have done all the process above, you have successfully convert a KVM to VDI.
